World's fittest man and woman win 2009 CrossFit Games

According to the official CrossFit Games Journal, "a Finnish firefighter and a Pennsylvania P.E. teacher are the Fittest Man and Fittest Woman in the world."

After competing in two days of muscle-ups, double-unders, handstand push-ups, Olympic lifts and a brutal trail run, Mikko Salo and Tanya Wagner were declared the 2009 CrossFit Games champions last Sunday, July 12th in Aromas, CA.

Mikko finished the Men's final WOD (Workout of the Day) in under 20 minutes to claim his title as the 2009 CrossFit Games champion:

  • 15 barbell cleans (155 lb.)
  • 30 toes to bar
  • 30 box jumps (24 inches)
  • 15 muscle-ups
  • 30 push presses (40)
  • 30 double-unders
  • 15 thrusters (135)
  • 30 pull-ups
  • 30 burpees
  • Overhead walking lunges (45)

Men's Individual Results.

Tommy Hackenbruck, who got to the Games via the Last Chance Qualifier, came in second.  Moe Kelsey of Kirkland Fire was third.  And last year's 2008 CrossFit champ Jason Khalipa clawed his way back from almost last to finish in fifth place.

Women's Individual Results.

Tanya Wagner improved on her second-place finish in last year's CrossFit Games by taking the 2009 title for "World's Fittest Woman."  Charity Vale of CrossFit Snohomish finished second. Carey Kepler came in  third.

Other Top Honors.

Northwest Crossfit won the top Team Affiliate Cup. Jolie Gentry was given the Military/LEO Award. And Jason Khalipa, the 2008 CrossFit Games champion, received the Spirit of the Games Award.

    I believe Tommy Hackenbruck took first in the sledgehammer workout, but Mikko Salo "Finnish-ed" the final WOD under 20 minutes(!) to claim first place. Truly amazing for his 8th torturous workout in about 33 hours.
