An experimental nuclear physicist has written an Open Letter to world renowned physicist, Dr Michio Kaku, challenging his dismissal of non-conventional energy devices - more popularly known as “free energy” machines. In a Coast to Coast AM radio interview on April 18, 2009, Dr Kako dismissed free energy machines as impossible due to their violation of energy conservation laws. Dr Robert Koontz, a nuclear physicist who has worked in various government projects and held Top Secret classification, pointed out the fallacies in Dr Kako’s thinking. Dr Kaku, according to Dr Koontz, needs to reconsider the feasibility of non-conventional energy devices. Otherwise he may suffer the same fate as early scientific critics of the Wright Brothers - critics dismissed the idea of heavier-than-air flying machines as impossible.
Dr Koontz begins his May 15 Open Letter:
Recently, on the popular late-night radio program, "Coast to Coast AM," which reportedly has a listening audience of millions, you indicated that investors call you up daily and ask whether certain inventions will work. Characterizing those devices as "perpetual motion machines" you said they were impossible to make.
Dr Kaku’s dismissal is based on energy conservation laws that are based on the scientific belief that energy can only ever be converted from one state to another. This leads to the view that the amount of energy in the universe remains constant, and no energy is ever lost or created. The idea that a machine can be created which generates more energy than it consumes to run forever has been deemed to be scientifically impossible. The idea of perpetual motion machines has long been discredited and has been used as a kind of scientific slight against those proposing non-conventional energy devices. It is this rigid scientific viewpoint that Dr Koontz directly challenges and goes on to say:
Dr. Kaku: You appear to believe that the universe has 11 dimensions, many of which are supposed to be hidden. Why would that be true while creation of energy using negative mass electrons or using gauge transformations would be impossible? Could you be wrong, sir? Undoubtedly you think you are not wrong, but could you be wrong, sir? You might say to me that negative mass electrons have never been seen. But those many dimensions you believe in have never been seen either. And is it not true that we physicists for decades have used negative mass electrons in our theories in order to reach agreement with experiment?
Dr Koontz’s reference to negative mass electrons is one way in which he believes energy conservation laws can be maintained in an unconventional energy device. He goes on to cite the work of Nobel Prize winning physicists, Dr Paul Dirac, who was the first to introduce negative mass electrons.
When Paul Dirac, the Nobel prize-winning physicist was developing the first form of relativistic quantum mechanics he found it necessary to introduce the concept of negative mass electrons. This subsequently led Dirac to develop the idea that a hole in a sea of negative mass electrons corresponded to a positron, otherwise known as an antielectron. Some years later the positron was observed and Dirac won the Nobel prize.
Another way for an unconventional or “free energy” device to work is for it to use rotating electromagnetic fields using magnets, plasma, or other electrical conductors. This creates what is called a “torsion field” where energy is generated from the rotating objects. According to Dr Elizabeth Rauscher and Nassim Haramein from the Resonance Project, torsion fields power all known rotating objects in the universe from suns and galaxies, to atoms.
Other physicists point to a zero point energy field where a quantum flux creates virtually unlimited energy. Essentially, free or "zero point" energy comes out of the vacuum of space in a manner similar to a bottle of soda that is shaken and opened. This was first theorized by the Dutch physicist Dr Hendrik Casimir in 1948 and later experimentally confirmed. The Casimir Effect is now used in nanotechnology to power microcircuits.
If an unconventional energy device uses negative mass electrons, as Dr Koontz claims, then the energy conservation laws of physics may well be maintained. If “free energy” devices use rotating magnetic fields or zero point energy, there appears to be no way energy conservation laws can be maintained unless one considers energy moving between dimensions. Interestingly, Dr Kaku believes that 11 dimensions exist - some of which are obviously beyond human perception. If so, there are a number of ways in which the energy conservation laws of physics can be maintained across the “omniverse’ of 11 dimensions while considering the feasibility of unconventional energy devices. Perhaps we’ll find some answers if and when Dr Kaku responds to Dr Koontz’s challenge.

E.g. things are confused in a hairraising manner: An electron has a negative charge and positive mass. A positron has a positive charge AND mass. Existence of both particles is accepted. The hyptothetical 'negative mass electron' has negative mass and negative charge. No such a particle was observed. So if Dr. Koontz claims such a particle, why he does not provide a proof for it? That would end all discussions. The same problem arises with String-Theory: None of the main-predictions [e.g. compactified-extra dimensions, super-strings] could be observed. However, other flavours of multidimensional quantum theories with non-compactified extra-dimensions show startling experimental and observational support. [E.g. And what about the experimental results that Dr. Koontz showed in his letter? No doubt you will say that is a fake. And What about Tesla? Will you say that he was a crackpot? Then there is the work of Dr. Thomas Henry Moray.

Obviously, you want to heat the ever lasting debate between perpetua-mobile-crazies (aka 'free'-energy-enthusiasts) and scientists/engineers who uphold (at least) 1st law of thermodynamics 1LTD [conservation of energy and momentum] since our universe anihilated itself, before it came into its existence, if 1LTD wouldn't be valid. Everybody, who feels, he could in fact violate 1LDT (=creation of energy from nothing) can let validate his claim as it is usual in scientific world: Publication of a paper that contains a proper physical description and a reproducable experiment, that unambigously proves the claim. And extraordinary claims require extraordinary proofs. Unfortunately, I haven't found such a document on Koontz's site. Only essays, claims, interviews - and nice videos, as thousends more are present from snake-oil selling perpetua-mobile 'inventors' on Youtube and elsewhere.
Answer this one, Shol'va: how can destructive interference of light in vacuum create "negative energy," or places where the energy fluctuations are "less than zero," as the Jan 2000 Scientific American article on the subject notes? Wouldn't that either tunnel into extra dimension, or beg the re-definition of the nature of "space-time?"
Try an overunity experiment before you say it's all impossible. It borrows energy from the flux in vacuum, which is very high.

Part 2: So the idea was to harvest ZPE. While first, enthusiastic estimations went toward mindboggling energy-densities, most recent assumptions go somewhere into a handful J/m^3.
However, even there is a problem: Second law of thermodynamics require a potential difference within a 'sea of energy' (what can be e.g. mechanical-, thermal-, electrical- or ZP-energy) to harvest work in a cyclic process.
Such a potential-difference can be created indeed by shielding low frequency components by very thin spaced conducting plates. [Casimir effect] Best yields are in the nW-range - what gives support to low-energy density proponents.
Final conclusion: ZPE isn't the way - otherwise we had it for a while. However, we have very cheap and highly effective energy sources, based on EHT and Einstein's good old equation E=m·c². The problem here is, achievable energy-levels are mindbogglingly dangerous. So these things will remain classified for a while. Sorry.
@George LoBuono: Many people have obviously a rather distorted idea, what zero-point-energy (ZPE, quantum vacuum fluctiations) is. There are two things: i) When temperature of matter is lowered to 0K (-273°C) all Brownian movements of atoms should cease. This is not the case. That's the proof, 0K isn't the lowest energy state of matter. Hence the name ZPE. ii) Quantum vaccum fluctuations is a stochastical process, where elemental- and subatomic particles appear 'out of the nowhere' and disappear after a short time. The mean energy however is zero. Hence energy can't be harvested from this process. While physical standard model introduced virtual particles to explain the effect, EHT (Extended Heim theory), a GUT (Grand Unification Theory) based on non-compactified extra-dimensions in R12, predict a tunnel-effect between adjecent subspaces induced by particle's magnetic moment M_ or H_-component for photons, and can leave hypothedized virtual particles alone (what fit to observations).
IN the video the "device" that generates the energy is simply a misdirection. The distribution box that sits on the table is where the power is really coming from. You notice he lifts the "device" but the box with the recepticals sits on the table using an inductive coupling. A simple transformer in other words. Initial voltage on the "device" is through the same means. If this simple device can generate 200Watts of electricity why he not have it tested by someone like Amazing Randy. Better yet simply build about 6 of these units and put them into a simple electric car and announce the media that he will drive it nonstop across the USA without stopping for fuel. This would prove without a doubt that it is not a fake. If this technology is so simple that hundreds of home mechanics are creating them in their garage that at least ONE would make it into the public without being stolen by the evil MIB or the oil companies? I agree with Pete on a lot of points. It is also very easy to fake videos nowadays and this makes all videos inconclusive when it comes to this stuff. Wanting to believe doesn't make it true. I guess I am quite burnt out on these free energy videos. Either really prove it works in real life or quit wasting our time as Pete indicated. I'm not saying zero point isn't attainable or other means may be possible. Just prove it irrefutably please. The truth does not abhor questioning. Also, there are light bulbs at any magic shop that have a battery inside that will light just by shorting out the center terminal and the rim. This video is inconclusive and proves nothing. Sorry, but I would need a lot more than this to be amazed or not have questions. This video proves nothing.

Maybe you'd be surprised, but we have free energy in abundance. And not all people are stupid as cows. Some of them are so intelligent, they have it even discovered. So what's about e.g. solar energy, hydromechanic energy, geothermal energy, wind energy? All these forms of energy are completly free. However, the logical short-circuit in the brains of free-energy-worshippers starts just here: To harvest all forms of energy (aka convert it in a suitable form and make it available on demand) requires all sorts of technical equipment, that have to be bought and maintained. E.g. if a home-owner decided to go off the grid, he can do it, when he buys solar panels, mount them on his roof and installs sufficient battery capacity to buffer night times. Then, all these parts wear out and need maintanence.
Conclusion: Usable energy is never really free.
Obviously FAKE.
Anybody can make such a video.
There are just too many places where a powersource can be hidden and there is not enough data on this device to say if it works or not.

I am convinced, we are nowhere near the 'end of science', where all that is to be discovred has been, even though many scientists act like that's the case. Our society, unfortunatelly, gets all of it's technological advances, only after they have been released (cleared) by the military and the spymasters. Apparently new discoveries have to be exploited for killing and war-profiteering before the civilians can get the benefit of access to them. Yes it is true. Such machines exist and do not violate any law. It is believed so because there is misconception! For a rigid body motion there is no thermo involved! (No gas),why should it violate thermo laws?
Gravity is like wind (or heat transfer!) But there is mass transfer, so convection. The gravitation is a kind of radiation or magnet like energy source.
How does a surfer ride on an ocean wave?: by gravity. he uses his muscles for balancing the surf not powering himself to ride to the shore.
Energy is also conserved because there is already an emitted energy to create gravity by earth or what ever as a force field. How about ocean water flows? When catches anything it drugs with the flow. Where does energy come from? Nevermind, we can just use it, as it is like wind (convection). A smart enegineer can capture power from gravity with an adeqaute design for such force fields!
