ACT’s artistic director calls Tales of the City “an extraordinary valentine to our entire community." This brand-new musical is based on the popular San Francisco newspaper columns written by Armistead Maupin in the 1970s.
Maupin shepherded a whole generation through the first sexually liberated decade in the most exciting city in the world. Salon.com called his columns “The most sublime piece of popular literature America has ever produced."
In Tales, naïve Mary Ann Singleton gets an eye-opening education from the residents and matriarch of 28 Barbary Lane. The ragtag group becomes her surrogate family, and teaches her about diversity and acceptance.
Tales made its transition to the stage with the creative team of Tony-ward winning Jeff Whitty and Jake Shears and John Garden of Scissor Sisters. The show is helmed by Jason Moore and choreographed by Larry Keigwin.
Tickets are available at the American Conservatory Theater box office at 415 Geary Street in San Francisco. Call 415.749.2228 or at www.act-sf.org. An opening night gala will also be held in Union Square on June 1.
