February 9th through December 31, 2013 The Appleton Museum of Art is host to the New World Treasures exhibit. De Soto’s search for gold began with his ships landing in Tampa Bay. Though his exact route afterward has been under debate for many years, that is until archeologist Ashley White made this amazing discovery.
White discovered artifacts that had been washed up on the edge of a creek bed on family property in Orange Lake, during a walk through the property. "There is a lot of drainage (on the ranch) ... and all this sand broke loose and we had artifacts just lying on top of the ground," Ashley White said according to Ocala.com
Now you have the chance to see these items at the Appleton. The collection of relics, hold Murano glass beads, coins, Spanish chain mail from armor, Native American artifacts and more.
While you’re at the Appleton be to visit the other special exhibit Rebels with a Cause: American Impressionist Women from the Huntsville Museum of Art. This exhibit hosts 54 paintings, drawings and sculptures created by prominent female artists from the mid 19th and mid 20th centuries.
Rebels with a Cause will be on display through March 31st. Museum hours are Tuesday – Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday from 12pm to 5pm. Admission for Adults is $6.00, seniors, students and educators $4.00 and $3.00 for youth 10 to 18 years. The museum is located on E. Silver Springs Blvd. in Ocala, Florida about an hour north of Orlando.
