The earth’s population hit the 5 billion mark on July 11, 1987. Today, World Population Day is an annual holiday observed on July 11th. The annual event is sponsored by the United Nations World Population Fund (UNFPA) in an effort to bring awareness to reproductive and global population issues.
World Population Day 2010
Each year, the special day has a different theme.
The theme for the 21st World Population Day of 2010 is “Everyone Counts” focusing on reliable data and analysis of the population and housing census. According to the website, “Good demographic data is critical for planning schools, health systems and public transportation, for designing polices based on future population projects, for monitoring the effectiveness of service delivery and much more.”
