World of Warcraft players donate $2.3 million for Sandy relief

Blizzard Entertainment announced Thursday that they have donated $2.3 million “to support the American Red Cross's ongoing Superstorm Sandy relief efforts.” The money was raised throughout December 2012 as World of Warcraft players purchased the in-game pet Cinder Kitten for $10 a piece. Blizzard donated 100% of the price to disaster relief efforts in the region, which are still ongoing.

The generosity of the community came as no surprise. Back in 2011, players donated $1.9 million for tsunami relief in Japan by purchasing Cernarion Hatchlings. With so much of the United States' east coast still recovering from Sandy, players saw this as an easy way of reaching out to their neighbors. The Cinder Kitten has playful idle animations and makes the sound of a meowing kitten when clicked. Though the fundraiser has ended, the Cinder Kitten can still be purchased from the Blizzard Store.

While the United States Congress is debating how much the country can afford to spend on disaster relief, hope can come in the form of a fiery kitten.
