Eve Online” developer CCP Games announced a partnership with White Wolf Games in 2006 to create a “World of Darkness” MMORPG. After nearly eight years of work, CCP Games announced Monday that the PC game was being canceled.

“The decision to end the World of Darkness MMO project is one of the hardest I’ve ever had to make,” CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson wrote on the company’s website. “I have always loved and valued the idea of a sandbox experience set in that universe, and over the years I’ve watched the team passionately strive to make that possible.”

The decision to cancel the project includes consequences beyond just another MMO title not seeing the light of day. 56 employees from the CCP Games studio in Atlanta, GA have lost their jobs while the remaining employees have been reassigned to work on “Eve Online”.

“I would like to give special thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make the World of Darkness MMO a reality, especially the team members affected by this decision,” Pétursson continued. “Their considerable contribution to CCP will not be forgotten, and we wish them well.”

So why did such a long in development MMO suddenly get canceled? According to Pétursson, it is because the game came was coming up short.

“I am truly sorry that we could not deliver the experience that we aspired to make. We dreamed of a game that would transport you completely into the sweeping fantasy of World of Darkness, but had to admit that our efforts were falling regretfully short, he wrote. “One day I hope we will make it up to you.”

“World of Darkness” was to be based on the “Vampire: The Masquerade” tabletop RPG series with a focus on “player politics and social interaction.” Full production of the game started in 2009 but signs of trouble cropped up in 2011 when CCP Games announced that it was pulling some of its staff from “World of Darkness” to focus on “Eve Online”. The project was last discussed during Eve Fanfest 2013 before it was officially canceled today.
