World Ocean’s Day coloring contest winners announced

Lucid Publishing, Save our Seas and the Kahekili Herbivore Fisheries Management Area have announced the winners of the World Oceans Day coloring contest. A representative from Lucid Publishing said that dozens of entries were received from children eager to learn more about ocean conservation. These organizations considered the contest a success since its purpose was just that: to increase awareness about ocean conservation.

For the contest, children were asked to color in their favorite herbivorous fish and explain why ocean conservation is important. Three age categories were judged: ages 3-5, ages 6-8, and ages 9-11. One of the judges said that they were excited to see how creative children can get with all the different color combinations. She went on to say that it is not about coloring the fish exactly as they appear since nothing is really uniform in nature anyways, and that the important part of this activity was that the children had fun, got to learn about the fish and express themselves creatively.

The winner for the 3-5 year old category is Avery Ardoin for his rendition of a rainbow colored Unicornfish. Honorable mention goes to Vivian Skibinsky of Anchorage, Alaska. Lauren Farly and Sydney Miyasato were the winners for the 6-8 year old category. Lauren used several different types of media to portray a Manini, and Sydney's understanding of coral reef ecology astounded the judges. Honorable mention for the 6-8 year old category goes to Keana Cooy of Lahaina for her colorful Yellow Tang. Justin Tye Kaulana Pulido wins the 9-11 year old division with a multicolored reef and a black and red Unicornfish. He also provided an insightful answer about the importance of the reef: because it gives food and shelter to the fish and other animals that live there.

Congratulations to all the winners. Winners will be receiving rash guards from Save our Seas and copies of the award winning title, The Complete Hawaiian Reef Fish Coloring Book where they will learn even more about Hawaii’s reefs and the fish that live there.
