Mother Nature tried her best to ruin the fun this past Friday night, by sending a big storm through Houston. But it didn't stop fans from checking out NWA Houston for a big live event that featured an appearance by the NWA World Heavyweight Champion and a huge return.
2013 has been a challenging year for the man known as Carson. Earlier this year, he began having problems with "The Modern Day Hero" Kevin Douglas, after the former NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion turned on Carson and even put him on the shelf with a vicious beating several months back. Last month, Douglas got a big scare when he was in the ring and Carson's music began to play. The distraction caused Douglas to lose his match, and let him know that "The Texas Prodigy" was just about ready to return.
On Friday night, Douglas had his hands full with Chaz Taylor. After a back and forth match, Chaz was able to get the win over Douglas. Infuriated by a consecutive loss, Douglas snapped and attacked Chaz's knee with a steel chair. The fans came to their feet when Carson made his long-awaited return to Cypress and made the save. Both Carson and Douglas were ordered to each find a tag partner, and they will have a tag team battle at NWA's INVASION event on October 18 at the Humble Civic Center.
After having a string of success that ultimately landed him the NWA Lone Star Heavyweight Championship, "Addictive and Expensive" Byron Wilcott set himself up for a huge opportunity this past weekend with a shot at Rob Conway and the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. Wilcott had previously stated he would not only walk out as champion, but leave Conway laying in the middle of the ring.
Wilcott and Conway went to war, and it was a back and forth contest. But Wilcott would get himself disqualified for smashing Conway with his trusty Shake Weight that always has with him. While he didn't walk away as champion, he did fulfill his promise of leaving Conway battered in the middle of the ring. Afterwards, Conway demanded that Wilcott face him in a streetfight, and the match was almost immediately signed. Conway and Wilcott will have their rematch for the NWA World Title on October 18 at Humble in a No Disqaualification match.
Amidst the wild action, there was also as huge title change. The Kingz of the Underground (Scot Summers and Ryan Genesis) put their NWA Lone Star Tag Team Titles on the line against the relatively new team of The Sons of Texas (Alex Reigns and "Cowboy" James Claxton). Now the Kingz and Claxton are no strangers to each other, which made for a hard-hitting affair between the two teams. After a brutal encounter, Reigns and Claxton walked away the brand new NWA Lone Star Tag Team Champions.
The word "amazing" has been used a lot in recent months to describe the in-ring peformance of Raymond "Death" Rowe. After match of the year quality encounters with "One Man" Mike Dell and Ricky Starks, Rowe has set the Texas scene on fire. He had a big challenge ahead of him Friday night, as he faced off against "The Name That Entertains" Jasper Davis. After a back and forth match, Jasper got a cheap pin on Rowe.
Tony Brooklyn immediately ordered that the match be restarted, but Jasper felt he had done enough to get the win and refused to get back in the ring. Brooklyn told him that was no problem, and promptly SUSPENDED Davis for 45 days. Enraged, Davis would later come back into the building, and not only have a few choice words for Brooklyn, but also publicly bought a ticket for the October 18 INVASION show that he was now officially suspended and barred from competing.
It was an exciting night of action all the way across the board, here's how the rest of the night shaped up:
- PROVING GROUNDS MATCH: Gil Guillory defeated Lobo, in a match featuring two guys getting their first opportunity to compete in front of the NWA Houston crowd.
- Rudy Russo defeated David Duperon to retain his NWA Lone Star Junior Heavyweight Championship. Prior to the match, Duperon announced that if he couldn't take Russo's title for the third time, he would leave NWA Houston. After the match, the two hugged in a big moment of sportsmanship between the two.
- Breaking Point (DJ King and Silky Baines) defeated Armadillo Kid and El Coyote.
- NWA Lone Star Women's Champion Barbi Hayden defeated Paige Turner to retain her title.
- Chaz Taylor defeated Kevin Douglas
- Ray Rowe defeated Jasper Davis after Davis refused to restart the match following a cheap win.
- Alex Reigns and James Claxton defeated The Kingz Of The Underground to win the NWA Lone Star Tag Tema titles.
- NWA World Heavyweight Champion Rob Conway defeated Byron Wilcott via DQ.
As heavily noted, the next stop for NWA Houston will be at the Humble Civic Center on October 18 as stars from New Japan Pro Wrestling storm into town for "INVASION." Check out the NWA Houston website for more information.
