August 1st marks the kick off of the 19th annual World Breastfeeding Week (WBW). Breastfeeding advocates from more than 170 countries will be celebrating.
This year, supporters of World Breastfeeding Week will focus on what they all the "Next-Gen" effect. They will seek to inform youth of the benefits and advantages of breastfeeding, as well as other breastfeeding issues, in an attempt to bring breastfeeding advocacy to the younger generation.
World Breastfeeding Week is officially supported by UNICEF and The World Health Organization (WHO). Both organizations make recommendations as to the optimal breastfeeding relationship for each child:
..initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour after the birth; exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months; and continued breastfeeding for two years or more...
World Breastfeeding Week lasts the first week of August, with events happening all over the globe to celebrate and raise awareness of breastfeeding.
