It is World breastfeeding week. Many of us know that breastfeeding our children offers them a good start on life. It provides antibodies from the mother, to help keep baby healthy and also provides nurturance that is good for brains, eye, and digestion development.
Breastfeeding can be a challenge and heartbreaking to those who try and can't seem to make it work. For those mothers who try but can't produce milk for one reason or another it is ok. World breastfeeding week is not to make anyone feel bad or left out, the purpose to help educate those who wish to try and help them succeed.
World breastfeeding week was started in 1990 to help promote the benefits of breastfeeding the raise support and understanding. One of the main benefits of this event is to help mothers in the work place get the support they need to continue breastfeeding their child after they start working. "It is not an easy task for a new mother to continue breastfeeding while they are returning to work when the infants are just three or four months old. They have to plan very carefully on when and how to pump and store the breast milk during the hours they are working. The Affordable Care Act enacted earlier this year will help in this endeavor." Says Susan Brady of Health News. This act will help mothers get the support they need form their boss and co works.
Support is key in breastfeeding, even if baby doesn't take to the breast it is still important for moms to have that support to let them know that they did their best. To find support on breastfeeding you can take a class at your local Babies R Us store or at your hospital. Penrose St.Francis has lactation consultants and classes for anyone interested. You can also join Facebook's World Breastfeeding Event.
