What better way to recover from the holiday hangover and get warmed up for the new year than I night of bad assed blues music, I can’t think of a better way. That is why I will be joining the packed crowd this Saturday night at the Buckhead Theatre when the North Mississippi Allstars (NMAS) roll into town.
NMAS is he brothers Dickinson (Luther & Cody) and they were born to play music and when they play live it is pure magic. Out front Luther handles the vocals and guitar work, which he makes look effortless. He is able to manipulate his instrument and make it cry like not many others whether he is jamming on a six string, a 3 string cigar box or 2 string coffee can guitar. His deep voice harkens back to blues singers like R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough as he belts out original tunes and some blues classics. Cody is usually camped out behind his drum kit dishing out thunderous rhythms that compliment Luther’s guitar work. He has been known to pick up a guitar, but his washboard solos get the crowd jacked. It seems like they are constantly touring and this go round they are out supporting their latest release World Boogie is Coming. It is more of a party than a record as they invite a wealth of fellow musicians to help the reinvent their tunes, old blues numbers and a few new songs. So expect material from all of their records plus a cover or two which will be given the NMAS flavor.
So get out of the house and take part into some great live music this Saturday night. The music will be loud and nasty and the theatre will be filled to the rafters. Be sure you get there early so you don’t miss Lightnin’ Malcom who is a pretty damn good guitar player himself. It doesn’t get much better than NMAS live, and if you don’t believe me then go see for yourself. I will be there, so if you see me feel free to say hello.
