"World Blues" musician Harper and his band the Midwest Kind come to Des Moines this Friday, March 22, for a show at the Gas Lamp (1501 Grand Avenue). The concert will run from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., and it will be a 21-and-over show. Tickets are $10, and they may be purchased at the door or online through MidwesTix.
Harper and Midwest Kind have created a unique "World Blues" sound by combining blues, rock, funk, folk, soul, and world music together. Harper's use of the harp, didgeridoo, and harmonica further add to the band's original take on roots music. Harper grew up on Perth, Australia's folk and blues music, having moved there at age ten from the United Kingdom.
Now teamed with his Michigan-based backing band the Midwest Kind, Harper has made a name for himself on the U.S. blues scene. Harper's last studio album, 2010's Stand Together, made it to #10 on Billboard's Roots Music chart and #2 on the XM/Sirius National Roots chart, while garnering a Detroit Music Award for "Most Outstanding Recording". His 2012 live album Live at the Blues Museum hit #1 on the XM/Sirius National Roots chart and was named "Best Live Recording" by Blues411. The album helped Harper earn two more Detroit Music Award nominations this year. Check out Harper and his band in the video below.
