Changes in the economy have created opportunities for some Phoenix job seekers to transition from one industry to another, or to consider positions that they may not have had access to previously. ‘Re-careering’ refers to shifts within industries to positions that may require training or education that the candidate has recently received, or shifts to new industries where similar skills from previous employment can be used effectively. Whether by choice or industry dynamics, Phoenix job seekers should consider some of the following questions when selecting what positions would fit as next steps in their careers.
- Does the company have mentors (formal or informal) who can assist in your transition? Having someone to ask questions (other than your direct supervisor) is of great value when changing industries or companies.
- What training or education is going to be required for the position and career path in the next five years? If you are moving into a highly technical or dynamic field, understanding the expectations for ongoing learning will be important in determining your ability to be successful.
- How does the organization view and support internal and external training and educational growth? Some companies may have formalized training modules on topics, others may use outside training teams for specific needs, and others may provide reimbursement for attendance at external seminars that provide direct value toward your competencies in your current or future roles.
University of Phoenix Hohokam Campus will be providing a free seminar, open to the public on Saturday, March 5th from 10am – Noon with more information about how job seekers can successfully navigate ‘re-careering’. For more information:
