Hailing from Chicago,Workout Music is on a mission to spread some cheer and produce some dance party inspired shows across the nation. The members consist of Tim Muldoon, Ben Spotora, Chris Harrell, Scott Kingdom, and Billy Kirby. Check out this great band:
How would you describe the genre of your music?
WM: Rock n' Roll, with a little dance and soul.
How did you come up the name of the band?
WM: Workout Music was originally intended to be someone/something doing electronic beats, with real grungy bass and vocals. It came to be a six piece, but the original idea of playing fun, dance party inspired shows stuck around.
What has been your biggest musical triumph to date?
WM: Headlining a sold-out show at the House of Blues in our hometown of Chicago was pretty special. A few years back we won WGN's Breakthrough Band contest which afforded us the opportunity to record our first EP on their dollar with acclaimed producer Manny Sanchez at IV Lab Studios.
What skills/personal attributes are most important, in your opinion, to being successful?
WM: All the P's: Practice, Passion, Persistence, Presence and Promotion. It certainly doesn't hurt to be good; but we're still trying to figure that out.
How important is image?
WM: Depends on what "image" is. Is it important what we look like? No, but we don't want to look like a bunch of bums. Is it important what we dress like? Not really, though no one wants to look like a clown. Is it important that no one goes on a coke binge, drinks a bottle of whiskey and backs our van into a venue? Very important.
What is the importance of the connections you make? How can you utilize them?
WM: It’s the most important. It's the same as in any other line of work; it's who you know.
Tell us three things that no one knows about you guys...
WM: Each of us has been in at least one other band with at least one other member of Workout Music.
Tim has played guitar, Ben has played drums, Scott has played guitar and Billy has been lead vocals. And Chris has always played bass.
What is the best advice you can give to another indie artist?
WM: Don't over saturate any market; especially the one you live in... give people a reason to want to come see you.
How do you engage with your fans?
WM: Social media makes it very easy to interact with everybody. We make sure we are available for photos, drinks and chats at all of our shows.
Are you currently performing and touring?
WM: Not touring currently. However, we continue to book gigs elsewhere and take Workout Music beyond the Chicagoland area.
Goals for 2014:
WM: We'll be teaming up with Mark McClusky to help produce our forth-coming EP which will include new, previously unrecorded material. We will film a new music video, play further away from home and reach new listeners.
