June 7 and 8 is Working Dog Weekend at the the Lake Metroparks Farmpark. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., come out and celebrate working dogs with a wide range of activities for kids and adults. Police K9's will be at the event, as will the Hampton Hills Newfoundlands who will perform water rescue demonstrations.

Children have the chance to try canine jobs and sports. Real dogs will be on hand to show them what to do. Some things they can try are:

  • Guide the blind
  • Try canine sports like agility, Flyball and Frisbee
  • Solve a mystery using only your nose! (Ranger Donaldson and K-9 partner Carly assist.)
  • Discover how dog power was used years ago by walking on a treadmill

There will be a toy dog parade, so kids should bring their stuffed animal dogs with them to march in a toy dog parade of breeds. After the parade, kids can take their toy dog to the vet. Doctors from the Animal Clinic of Chardon will be on hand to guide children through a check up on their toy dogs. During the check up, kids will be able to:

  • Hear the heartbeat of a dog through a stethoscope
  • Learn to check a dog's eyes, ears and teeth
  • Look through a microscope at a flea
  • See x-rays of puppies before they are born
  • Discover how a microchip works
  • Make a cone collar
  • Make a dog toy to take home
  • Help with a wellness check on a real dog in the Theater

The Farmpark is located at 8800 Euclid Chardon Rd in Kirtland. For more information, call 440.256.2122 or visit lakemetroparks.com
