Words With Friends: Super Bowl Competition

Words With Friends has quite a growing following of players, or addicts, as the players in Northeast Tennessee call themselves. This Scrabble-like game by Zynga is currently one of the most popular Facebook games, and even the New York Giants are caught up in the excitement.

People who play this game do so in one of two ways:

  • Making a move or so each day at their convenience, often having several games going with different people.
  • Playing a game with one person in a timely way, often in one sitting.

The competition among groups of friends and acquaintances becomes intense at times, with many playing in an almost round robin fashion. Accusations of cheating and suspicion when a high scoring word is played is all part of the fun.

There was an article in the Wall Street Journal site describing the Words With Friends frenzy in the New York Giants locker room. You could just as easily substitute the names of residents and former residents of the Tri-Cities who all play each other online.

Linebacker Michael Boley plays with Tuck. Punter Steve Weatherford is in a game with linebacker Chase Blackburn. (Blackburn is winning by 30 points, thanks to "zigs" on a triple word box.) Reserve lineman Jim Cordle said tight end Jake Ballard, a one-time Ohio State teammate, quit on him this summer ("I kept destroying him," Cordle says), and DeOssie recently finally stopped playing with Tuck.

"He takes it too hard when he loses," DeOssie said. "He'll complain for days."
