Some fitness gifts are so much fun you look for excuses to give them to your girlfriend, mother, coworker, fitness instructor, or maybe even yourself.
The gym towels created by Silicon Valley-based Words to Sweat By are this kind of gift.
The towels, emblazoned with motivational messages, are that perfect "little something." Upbeat, inspirational, practical. Fun to give, fun to receive. The perfect fit. Good in a gift basket, good all alone. Packaged in organza but ready for real work, the towels have appliqué "mantras" such as, ‘There will be no jiggle in my wiggle,' 'Carpe Dumbbells,' and ‘Squat is a four-letter word."
These towels aren't just for show. They are actual gym towels, 100% cotton, 16"x24", washer and dryer durable. $9.95 is a little pricy for a single gym towel, but if it inspires you to run and not grow weary, well then say "YEA."
Words to Sweat By's founder, Dana Lardner, is a San Jose entrepreneur and fitness buff. She worked in high-tech for a dozen or so years before leaving the daily cubicle to launch a children’s apparel and accessories company. In the manner of many Valley entrepreneurs she moved on from her first venture and decided to create Words to Sweat By. The idea, she says, came while she was working out and noticing that gym towels were far more boring than other fitness gear.
The towels are currently available in two styles: the "Original Words" line and the "World-Class Words" line.
The Original Words is a line of towels each with its own special saying (or mantra, as the company refers to them). Each towel sells for $9.95 and includes sayings such as:
- No Excuses
- Strength. Compassion. Peace
- Dancing my butt off, literally
- The bike is stationary, but I am not
The World-Class Words is a line of athlete-inspired towels with a "mantra" by the athlete, a representation of the athlete and her or his signature. Currently featured athletes come from the competitive sports of champion Speed Skating (Katherine Reutter, Short Track Speed Skater), Triathlon (Laura Bennett), Fencing (Mariel Zagunis) and Nordic Combined Skiing (Billy Demong). Price: $15.75 with a portion of the net proceeds sold from an athlete’s towel donated to support his or her training.
The World-Class Words Towel Collection featuring images and phrases coined by top Olympic athletes is being launched in time for the 2012 games; mantras in Spanish and (in time for the holidays) some of the mantras will begin appearing on t-shirts and a line of socks.
