Wootton leads Drexel to win over UNCW

Senior forward Taylor Wootton poured in 25 points as the Drexel Dragons (17-7, 10-3 CAA) defeated the UNC Wilmington Seahawks, 59-47, on Tuesday night. Senior guard Hollie Mershon also chipped in with 19 points as it was the first game Drexel played without senior forward Nicki Jones, who is out for the year with a knee injury.

The Dragons struggled shooting the ball in the first with a 26% mark and trailed for most of the period. But a Wootton running jumper as time expired gave Drexel an 18-17 lead at the break and the Dragons never relinquished that lead. Freshman guard Meghan Creighton and Wootton each knocked down a three-pointer to start the second half giving Drexel a 24-17 lead and the Seahawks would not be able to recover from the hot start after the intermission.

Drexel will take on George Mason on Thursday night at home in game two of the three-game homestand followed by a Sunday afternoon matchup with William & Mary.
