Woof! Bulldog Bike Ride to take place February 23

Hey, Houston cyclists: it just keeps getting warmer and warmer, doesn't it. This weather has me wondering: did we all blink and miss the winter of 2013? Of course, for two-wheelers like us, that's a good thing: no full-finger gloves and shoe covers for riders in the Bayou City, even in February.

Speaking of February, have you filled out your ride calendar for the month yet? Well, you wannabe BP MS150 riders had best be getting some seat time under your chamois. And what better way to do it than in the company of a couple thousand of your fellow riders out on the prairies around the bucolic town of Waller? So get your bike and gear, and join us for the Bulldog Bike Ride on Saturday, February 23. It's "Where the Big Dogs Ride." Woof!

Three courses - 25, 32 and 50 miles - roll out from Waller Junior High School in three waves beginning at 8:00 a.m. Riders will cover familiar territory in Waller County north of the towns of Waller and Prairie View, along lightly-traveled roads also traversed by events like the Bluebonnet Ride and Tour de Pink. Expect mostly flat country with occasional "rollers" and small stream crossings.

Proceeds of the ride benefit student activities at Waller Junior High. The grateful students and teachers will staff the rest stops and also serve a post-ride pancake feast.

Registration is $40 per person until February 21, after which walk-up registration for $45 is the only alternative. On-line registration is available at EZToRegister.com until 6:00 p.m. on the 21st, or you can download a copy of the registration form on the ride website and and mail it in or register at the Cypress Bike Barn. Riders who register early are guaranteed a t-shirt but it's first-come, first-shirted for on-site registration.

Details to remember: The Bulldog Bike Ride is a BP MS 150 recommended training ride. As with all MS150 recommended rides, safety rules will be enforced: helmets are required, headphones and earbuds are prohibited. SAG and medical support will be provided as well as staffed rest stops and course marshals.

Getting there: Waller is about 52 miles northwest of downtown Houston along US 290, the Northwest Freeway. Take US 290 (the Northwest Freeway) to the Field Store Road exit, Turn left (south) to the old Waller ISD stadium, just south of Business 290 on your right (NOTE: not the new stadium on Stokes Road). Park at the stadium for the start; on-site registration is in the junior high school gym.
