Woody Allen is speaking out about the latest accusations against him, and he is denying them. Yes, Woody Allen is once again in the hot seat. This director seems to make more news about his life away from the big screen, but he is still one of the most watched directors when it comes to film. His latest film is now in theaters, but he is dealing with reports about his lack of casting black actors in his works. The Spread It shared his comments about these new allegations on Aug. 1.
If you are a fan of Woody Allen's work, you might have noticed that he does not hire many black actors to work in his projects. This has caused new allegations against Allen. Earlier this year, New York Daily News published a report slamming the director for not hiring black actors to appear in his stage production of "Bullets over Broadway." The production is set in the Cotton Club in Harlem, and one would think a need would arise for black actors. However, Allen did not cast one African-American actor for the production. In fact, he asked his staff not to hire any at all.
Allen has now spoken out about these allegations in a new interview, and he denied them completely. He said that he would hire the person that was right for the part. His decisions are not based on race at all. He said the following to explain his casting decisions:
"You don't hire people based on race. You hire people based on who is correct for the part. The implication is that I'm deliberately not hiring black actors, which is stupid. I cast only what's right for the part. Race, friendship means nothing to me except who is right for the part."
Allen further defended himself against the allegations by mentioning his African-American friends. He is close to Chris Rock, and he mentioned Spike Lee. However, Lee has criticized Allen in the past. He went on to joke that he does not have "white friends" either. He is not one to socialize with anyone.
Currently, fans of the director can see "Magic in the Moonlight" in theaters. The film stars Emma Stone and Colin Firth. The actress plays a young psychic in the film, and it is set in 1928 France. Allen did speak out about the film and its plot in a recent interview. He said the following, according to the Washington Post:
"Emma Stone is a little oasis. . . . She’s charming and he’s in love with her. So they will have some moments of clinging together, of comforting each other, of maybe marrying, maybe having children, and [they’ll] get a little moment of pleasure, a little oasis of pleasure. But what’s going to happen to them is not good."
Allen also admitted in the interview that he was not happy with the final product. However, the director is rarely happy with any of his films. Woody Allen has made many films over the years. In fact, he has made a new film every year since 1978. Fans still see his movies on the big screen no matter what drama is happening in his life off-screen. Why do people keep coming to see his work? One box office analyst, Paul Dergarabedian, said the following about the continued popularity of Allen's work, according to KHOU.com:
"For fans, I think there's a total separation that occurs with Woody Allen. Coming in, you know there's this baggage ... but his filmmaking transcends all that. His audiences seem to keep lining up for his films."
Allen does not really care about how the public receives his work though. His focus is on making the best work he can. He enjoys what he does, and he seems to ignore all the criticism about his work and his personal life.
