Woodland Sleuth is a common green Human in Magic: The Gathering’s Innistrad. This detective of the woods is a bit dodgier than Gravedigger, but it gives green a way to bring back those werewolves and beasts for another go.

Morbid – When Woodland Sleuth enters the battlefield, if a creature died this turn, return a creature card at random from your graveyard to your hand.

Woodland Sleuth isn’t really constructed material, but looks like it might be an excellent Limited choice for getting back loose objects pitched in the yard. Randomness and a morbid requirement make Woodland Sleuth much more difficult to play around than normal Gravedigger variants, but players do get an extra point of toughness out of the bargain and get to enjoy the effect in green.
Woodland Sleuth is best played after an early trade with a creature you’d like to get back, something quick and evasive that the opponent wastes a flyer on. This will let you resume play and keep swinging with your creature and put a fairly solid body on the ground at the same time.
Woodland Sleuth can also attempt to get your bomb creatures back, but it’s likely that there will be some competition in the graveyard when you’re trying to retrieve your ace in the hole.
Dig up some old friends with Woodland Sleuth at Magic: The Gathering Innistrad prerelease events, kicking off September 24-25.
