In this case, the homeowners had a perfectly serviceable kitchen for years. It included a Corian countertop and matching backsplash in turquoise, which brought a lot of color to the eclectic kitchen that is a combination of rustic and vintage. Turquoise was a bold choice, but it worked. In fact, the homeowners were happy with their kitchen, but they wanted a new look and the time was right.

To spice things up, they chose to swap out the Corian for a solid wood countertop and a natural, stacked stone backsplash. They decided to outfit the area behind the stove with vintage-style tin ceiling tiles.

The choice of wood for the countertop was an easy one. The kitchen island was staying put and it was topped with a plum slate from Vermont. In addition, the homeowners have a pastry table adjoining the island, which is topped with white marble. Adding more cold stone to the kitchen was not an option. The homeowners didn't care for granite and other stone options, both natural and synthetic, were never seriously considered either.

Instead, the homeowners wanted a warm aesthetic that would look like the kitchens of old when rich, warm wood countertops were the norm; think Victorian kitchens or kitchens of the early part of the 20th century.

They opted for an American Cherry countertop from Craft Art Wood Countertops with a hand-distressed finish. The stacked stone is Beach Walk, purchased from American Import Tiles while the tin tiles were ordered online through American Tin Ceiling Co. in a brushed nickel finish.

Sprovieri's Custom Counters was retained to do the counter installation. They laser, measured the countertop and approximately six weeks later, they came back to do the installation. With the countertop installed, the backsplash was tiled and the tin tiles were glued into place behind the stove.

All in all, the makeover took less than a week and there was minimal mess and upheaval. Yet the change is dramatic.
