Inspired by the true story of Bruce Lee's Master Ip Man, the film stars Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Zhang Ziyi, Chang Chen, Zhao Benshan, Song Hye-kyo, and Wang Qingxiang, along with a fight cameo from MMA star Cung Le.
The New York premiere took place at the Regal E-Walk Stadium 13 Theater with such luminaries as Martin Scorsese lending his support for the film's U.S. theatrical release.
"The Grandmaster" earned HK $21,156,949 (U.S. $2.7 million) at the Hong Kong box office and grossed over $312 million yuan (U.S. $50 million) at the mainland Chinese box office, and is Wong Kar Wai's highest grossing film to date.
Wong Kar Wong is best known for his Hong Kong films including "In The Mood For Love" and "ChungKing Express" which both starred Tony Leung Chiu-Wai.
"The Grandmaster" opens August 23, 2013 in limited theatrical release in select U.S. cities.
