Southern California gets all the good stuff: Amoeba Records, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Disneyland … and now WonderCon. Sister of the reigning pop culture mecca San Diego Comic-Con, WonderCon has made the temporary switch to the Anaheim Convention Center for 2012.
Typically held in San Francisco, WonderCon organizers made the move to Orange County while the San Francisco Convention Center is undergoing construction. WonderCon will be held March 16-18, 2012 at the Anaheim Convention Center, which is right next door to the Disneyland Resort.
This move may make some nerds’ heads explode with the thought of a popular culture and comic book convention in such close proximity to the Disneyland Resort. What to do? Discuss the ultimate gamer/80s nostalgia novel Ready Player One with Ernest Cline, or ride Indiana Jones Adventure? Wait in line for the recently revamped Star Tours ride, or wait in line to meet Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy?
Unlike San Diego Comic-Con, WonderCon tickets (AKA badges) are easier to come by and still available for purchase online. Guests include Wil Wheaton, Scott Snyder, Joe Hill and many more. For a full list, just visit the WonderCon site. There will also be a slew of exhibitors, such as IDW Publishing and HBO, at the event. You can also connect with WonderCon through Twitter and Facebook for updates.
If you are unable to jet west for your comic book convention fix, this April Boston plays host to both Boston Comic-Con and Anime Boston. Boston Comic Con is the Northeast’s largest pop culture and comic book convention and is being held April 21 – 22 at the Hynes Convention Center. Manga and kawaii connoisseurs won’t want to miss Anime Boston, also being held at the Hynes Convention Center, April 6 – 8.
