The Drexel Dragons women's basketball team returned to Philadelphia yesterday, returning from a 10-day trip to Italy. Players, coaches, administrators, alumni and friends of the women's basketball program took a flight to Rome on Friday September 2nd and started a great adventure including both business and pleasure.
During the trip, the Dragons played in four games against four different Italian teams. Drexel finished 2-2 with convincing wins over Pomezia and AD Firenze Basket and tough losses to Lucca and La Spezia. During the trip, senior Kamile Nacickaite led the Dragons in scoring with 17.5 PPG, including scoring 20 and 22 points, respectively, in Drexel's two victories. Junior guard Hollie Merson also performed extremely well on the trip averaging 15.3 PPG and led the team in scoring with 16 and 17 points, respectively, in the Dragons' two losses.
Newcomers Nicole Jones and Tiffany Johnson logged their first playing time as part of the Drexel Dragons program and they both played admirably. Jones, a junior transfer from the University of Massachusetts, scored seven points in Drexel's win over Pomezia and in the same game, Johnson, a freshman from Prep Charter in Philadelphia, added five points.
Drexel's hard work on the Italian basketball courts was coupled with a great tour of many great sights in Italy. Highlights of the trip included visits to the Colleseo, the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel in Rome, the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
The 2011-2012 season begins on November 11th with the opening round of the Women's Pre-Season NIT where Drexel hosts Long Island University. The rest of the Dragons schedule will be announced some time this week.
