John Parks, the Chief Instructor at the Martial Science Center, LLC, answered some questions regarding the seminar:

What makes these techniques so effective and not reliant on strength?

The techniques presented are based on battlefield proven and tested strategies.  They have been modified where necessary to incorporate today’s environmental conditions. All the techniques presented rely on exploiting the weaknesses in human anatomy for their effectiveness. As an example, a wrist grasp is weakest between the thumb and fingers. By focusing the escape at that point, the need for strength is minimized and effectiveness is maximized.

What kinds of attacks will the trainee learn to protect against?
Some common attacks are wrist grabs, elbow grabs, lapel grabs, head locks, hair grabs, and various chokes. As such, the techniques presented are designed with escape as the primary intent. Most assailants will seek to control a woman's actions by force, such as pushes, grabs, and other grapples. Many of these techniques can definitely be used against strikes as well, but the main focus for this Level One class is on escaping the threat and getting to safety.

Will weapon techniques be taught?
Yes. Students will discover the effectiveness of using a simple pen or magazine as a tool to defend themselves. What makes this seminar so effective is that the techniques presented with open hand are fully adaptable to weapon techniques, and this only adds to their effectiveness. By careful consideration of techniques and applications, the trainee will be learning many things in parallel. Open hand and weapon technique similarity is one such instance.

Are there any success stories?
I have had many former trainees contact me letting me know that a technique protected them against great harm or possibly death. Many women continue taking future seminars to keep their skills honed as time allows. Some decide to enroll in a full time martial arts program.

What else will trainees learn?
The most important thing these success stories impart is the sense of empowerment. For many, the need to reinforce that it's OK to say "No", or it's OK to protect one's self is the most important aspect to overcome. You always have permission to protect yourself. You never have to be a victim of someone else's hostility. In many cases, the confidence that the seminar imparts and the sense of empowerment it generates is enough to help women overcome and depart a bad situation.
