Think the typical online gamer is a nerdy, anti-social, teenaged boy? Think again! 55% of the people playing games online are women according to a survey conducted for GameHouse, a web-based community for avid gamers. 35% of those women live in the South.
Online gaming is sometimes viewed as a "lonely" hobby considering the aforementioned stereotypical player. However, this study proves the contrary on a multitude of levels. 64% are over the age of 35, in a committed relationship, and have children. They exercise regularly, have a thriving off-line social life, and have sex at least once a week.
The women who are into online gaming are far from using this to fill a void in their lives. More than half use gaming as a way to relieve stress or take a mental break from their daily activities. Gaming moms often play after their kids go to bed. Since they have very active social lives, very few use it as a way to interact or connect with people.
