Commonality is all but forgotten in our noisy, busy, male-dominated world of business. People ‘walk and talk’ their differences, but not their similarities as a matter of course.
The business world is competitive, but not communal. Winning is viewed as ‘either/or’ – not as ‘and/both.’ The ‘other as object’ mindset predominates.
Enter women in business. They are natural relationship-builders. The game of networking (not to mention, leadership) is changing. Commonality has a voice. The ‘and/both’ is you and me. The ‘other as object’ is now ‘us as subject.’
If you’re a woman in business who wants to network naturally – make it a ‘brain’ thing – in 3-steps:
1) Relax…your brain. The stressed brain cannot learn. It also cannot network. Reduce stress daily through exercise, meditation, play, etc. Use any tools and techniques that bring you back to center.
2) Deepen…your mind. Networking isn't a monotonous task at a mandatory business function. It’s as natural as the sun or the moon. Humans are social beings with a built-in need to communicate (some more, some less) with each other. Networking is as easy as laughing at a good joke.
3) Imagine…the possibilities. Here’s a question to get you started: 'What does great networking look like (sound like or feel like) to me?' Close your eyes and imagine. What do you see, hear or feel? Hey, girlfriends: 17/17/17 seconds will make it real.
Networking today? Make it a 'brain' thing -- and network at your best.
