Woman who threw puppy in trash charged criminally

A woman in Muncie is facing criminal charges after she tossed a live puppy into a trash can and left it there to die.

Shemika Robinson, 36, was officially charged with animal neglect or abandonment, a misdemeanor offense.

The trouble began when Mike Upchurch, a sanitation worker, found a live Shih-tzu mixed puppy in Robinson's garbage can on February 13. The worker notified the Muncie Animal Shelter, who came and rescued the six-week old puppy.

The puppy was taken to a vet clinic after being rescued. It was treated for starvation and low-blood sugar.

Upchurch adopted the puppy and named him Garby.

Robinson has been in trouble with the law before, having been convicted in 2010 for receiving stolen goods. Robinson is also alleged to have tossed a live puppy into the garbage before Garby, beliving the puppy to be deceased.

Robinson is scheduled to appear in court on March 25.
