Following news reports of shots fired on Capitol Hill, NBC news has reported that a woman tried to ram her car through the White House gate. The woman also had a child in her car. The Capitol was placed on lockdown for about 30 minutes.
Officers with drawn guns surrounded the black sedan after the woman tried to crash through the White House gate, but she suddenly sped away. The high speed chase lasted about 12 blocks when the woman’s car hit a Capitol Police vehicle and crashed into barricades. She was chased by the Secret Service and finally shot and killed by police. The child was not hurt.
Although the woman did not have a gun, “She was using the car as a weapon,” according to one source. Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine said “This appears to be an isolate incident…[b]oth scenes are under control.” The government shutdown has already created a tense atmosphere on Capitol Hill, and President Barack Obama “was briefed about the harrowing incident.
Meanwhile, an injured officer was taken to the hospital by a medevac helicopter that landed in front of the Capitol after the incident there. “It was like the first volley in a 21-gun salute,” Rep. Matthew Cartwright, D-Penn., told MNSNBC.
Terrorism is not suspected at this time. The investigation continues.
