Woman shot in the head, killed after answering knock on door in Atlanta

A 34-year-old woman was shot in the head and killed after answering a knock on her door early Tuesday morning in southwest Atlanta. But investigators have not yet determined who shot the woman and why.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified her as Rashawn Jackson, of Atlanta.

The shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. at an apartment complex at 1829 Campbellton Road, according to Atlanta police. Someone had called 911 to report a person shot, police spokeswoman Officer Kim Jones said. When officers arrived they found Jackson already dead, Jones said.

It’s unclear who called 911 and police have not said who else was in the home at the time of the shooting. It's also unclear if they saw the shooter or saw the suspect leaving the scene.

Channel 2 Action News reported that the victim was shot in the head after answering a knock on her door.

“We don’t believe that this is a random act,” police Capt. Paul Guerrucci told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “We believe that whoever did this, they knew each other.”

The other people who were inside the apartment when the woman was shot were being interviewed by investigators, Gerrucci said early Tuesday morning.

“The other occupants were family members, and they’re very distraught right now,” he said.

He said detectives “have some degree of information as to a possible suspect.” But police have not released any description of the suspect or the type of gun used in the crime. It's also unclear how the shooter escaped after committing the crime.
