Woman's thirst for first class has her seeking air-travel advice

Dear Sky Steward,

I read one of your columns recently in which you advised a reader to create a "goody bag" for flight attendants in order to possibly receive an upgrade to first or business class. I felt it was a bit tasteless; however, I tried it on my flight from New York to San Francisco and although I did not receive an upgrade, I was treated like a VIP by the flight crew. I must admit that I did feel a little guilty that my gesture was done for selfish reasons--rather than out of pure kindness.

Do you know a more sure-fire way to get upgraded that does not involve "bribery"?

Thanks,

Guilty in Greenwich Village

Dear G.G.,

Be reminded that the "gourmet goodies bag" is something to be reserved for extremely long trips, when premium seats are extremely expensive, and for times that you are feeling a bit kind and generous. The best way to see your chances for upgrades rise is to become an elite frequent flier in a major airline's flier loyalty club. The Sky Steward himself, although a Purser for American Airlines is as well a Platinum Member of their frequent flier program, AAdvantage, and he swears by the benefits. It may take some time to rack up some miles in order to reach these levels--AAdvantage Gold 25,000 miles, AAdvantage Platinum 50,000, Executive Platinum 100,000; but the perks are quite addictive.

Check out the elite programs at your preferred airline. This way you can rid yourself of the guilt that bribery brings and enjoy the luxury you desire. Cheers to your pre-departure champagne!

    Dear Gailen,

I so saw the movie where they went to the high-school reunion and said she created post-it's. How fun!! I am also going to try this as I am leavilng on the 15th for Italy -- 9 hr-flight. I'm desperate. We're not in business class. Help!!

Agreed. As a mid-tier elite (Platinum) on American Airlines, since December 08 on 10 transatlantic flights I have recieved 4 operational upgrades to business class. Not bad considering I buy the cheapest tickets going.
