Woman's story of acid attack a hoax - video, slideshow

The adage that truth is stranger than fiction certainly applies in the case of a Vancouver, Washington woman who claims someone threw acid in her face.   As it turns out, she is that someone.

Fox News said, "28-year old Bethany Storro admitted she lied when she reported an African American woman poured acid on her face when she pulled up at a local Starbucks August 30th. The story gained national attention and even led to copycat attacks across the country."

According to the BBC, "Ms Storro, 28, initially told police an unknown African-American woman had thrown a cup of liquid into her face after asking, 'Hey, pretty girl, want something to drink?'

"She underwent surgery and made several media appearances, including a televised press conference with her head wrapped in bandages."

Time reported, "After investigating, police discovered a number of discrepancies in her story. The splash pattern of the hydrochloric acid her skin seemed more consistent with rubbing on than being thrown on. Once pressured by investigators, Storro confessed the injuries were self-inflicted.

"Vancouver Police Chief Clifford Cook said he did not know Storro's motive, but added the 28-year-old was 'very remorseful.'"

It is very easy for us to jump to conclusions about why such a lovely young woman would disfigure herself and lie about it.  I suspect she is very troubled.   At the same time, regardless of how much someone is hurting, they should not lie.  Exodus 20:16 says, "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."

Miss Storro lied about the race of her fictional attacker and put police to work when they could have been protecting people against real crimes.

If she were black, would the public be so empathetic about her mental well-being?

That is so sad. I remember talking about this story with my sister. Horrible that someone could do that. Makes you realize how important it is to speak the truth.
