A woman's execution was postponed today. An article at ABC says the rare female execution was to be carried out this evening, but the woman's execution was stopped after she received a stay just five hours before it was scheduled to occur.
Kimberly McCarthy was scheduled to die by lethal injection this evening for the 1997 murder of her elderly neighbor. McCarthy entered her neighbors home, on the guise of borrowing a cup of sugar, when she stabbed and bludgeoned her to death, the cut off her ring finger and pawned the ring.
McCarthy's supporters, and Anti-death-penalty groups claim McCarthy is deeply remorseful for her heinous actions, and that killing her now will only cause more hurt. They also insist McCarthy only carried out such crimes because she had a substance abuse addiction.
According to news reports, "Dallas County Assistant District Attorney Shelly Yeatts says McCarthy's execution date now is April 3."
The woman's execution was postponed today as her lawyers "contend the jury that convicted her of murder was improperly selected on the basis of race" since McCarthy is black, and her jury was "made up of 11 whites and one black person."
What do you think? Should Kimberly McCarthy have been issued a reprieve?
