Woman's belly button 'explodes' after tummy tuck surgery

A British woman has been awarded more than $36,000 in compensation after a botched tummy tuck caused her belly button to ‘explode’ on a plane, reported by Fox News on Monday

Patricia Jackson, 68, was on a flight when her belly button ‘erupted’ causing foul smelling contents from her stomach to leak. Other passengers were complaining about the smell.

Jackson had the tummy tuck 9 years ago but surgeons did not create a new belly button at the time and left parts of the old one inside her.

Years later she started to have pain and an foul smelling discharge leaking from her abdomen. Doctors failed to find the actual cause of the discharge.

During a flight, her belly button erupted. She had to sit on the aisle seat and keep re-dressing the leaking wound in the bathroom.

After undergoing reconstructive surgery, she was given a new belly button and now has no leaking.

Jeanette Aspinall, head of medical negligence at Fletchers Solicitors, who helped with the case, says, ‘This case highlights how easy it is for an everyday cosmetic surgery procedure, like a tummy tuck, to go wrong, both with the surgery itself and if the proper after care is not administered."

Tummy tucks carry risks, complications can include infection, bleeding under the skin flap, or blood clots. Insufficient healing can occur which can cause more significant scarring or loss of skin. A second surgery may be required.
