Police said Steiner entered the plea in Madison County Circuit Court, Division II. Steiner’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for Dec. 5. She faces a sentencing range of one to two years each on both counts of statutory rape.
A plea of no contest (also known as a nolo contendere) is a plea where the defendant doesn’t deny or admit to the charge he or she faces, according to a Frontline special on pleas. The plea serves as an alternative to pleading not guilty or guilty, but has the same effect as a guilty plea, as far as sentencing goes.
The department said it was made aware of the incident on Feb. 25. Investigators learned that on Feb. 24, Steiner and the boy had consensual sex in a room at Skyline Church of Christ, located at 1024 Skyline Drive.
When the incident was first reported, it was reported that Steiner and the boy began inappropriately touching each other in the room. The boy tried to stop, but Steiner forced him to have sex.
Steiner surrendered at the Jackson Police Department on Feb. 27 and was released from the Madison County Jail on $5,000 bond the same day.
