According to information made available on January 27, 2012, a woman in Nevada allegedly photographed a UFO landing on Groom Lake earlier this month. Groom Lake is a salt flat used by the military as a runway for the Nellis Bombing Range Test Site airport located on the north of the Area 51 United States Air Force (USAF) military installation.
The Canadian reported that the UFO was spotted hovering above a C-17, a military cargo carrier capable of carrying another aircraft on its roof. The USAF reportedly has aircraft similar to the flying saucer-shaped object seen in the photograph.
The photo taken by the witness shows a dull metallic disc with a bumpy or pitted surface floating just feet off the ground. No lights are visible on its exterior, but the picture was taken during the day so the craft may be equipped with lights that just aren't visible in the photo.
The unidentified flying object was seen above and behind the military plane from the viewer's vantage point near Area 51. Due to its location, the UFO in the object is likely a military aircraft or prototype of some kind.
The photograph also raises the question of why a civilian would be close enough to an Area 51 runway to take photographs of military aircraft in the first place. Of course, there is also the possibility that the photo may be a hoax.
This certainly isn't the first time a UFO sighting or other strange phenomena has been reported in the vicinity of notorious Area 51. The area is well known for its connection to the Roswell UFO incident that took place in Nevada in 1947.
