Want to do something to motivate yourself to lose weight? One woman came up with a unique method that garnered 300 million views on Reddit and a weight loss of 88 pounds: Documenting her progress and publicizing it on social media, reported the Medical Daily on September 6.
Identifying herself only as "Amanda," the woman began her diet weighing 222 pounds. She followed a ketogenic/paleothic diet — a food plan high in fats, moderate in protein, and low in carbohydrates. Amanda ate primarily eggs, fish, mean, poultry, vegetables and nuts, did not exercise and motivated herself by taking "selfies" to document her progress, all of which she publicized on Reddit.
“I knew that I had to start somewhere,” Amanda told ABC News on September 4. “I figured if I did it [took pictures] at least once a month, at the end of however long it took, I would have this really cool end product.”
Commenting on Amanda's public documentation of her loss, Dr. Jen Ashton, ABC News’ senior medical contributor, said: "The waist got smaller. The bustline got bigger. The neckline got smaller” of Amanda’s physical changes. “But the more significant changes actually occur inside our bodies,” she said. “Changes to one’s sense of self, to one’s physiology [and] to one’s internal metabolism.”
So what is a ketogenic diet? It's designed to intentionally deprive your body of carbohydrates, removing grains and starches from your meals and snacks. Because your body lacks those sources of carbohydrates for energy, it takes energy from stored fat instead. The term ketogenic refers to the biochemicals known as ketones produced during the conversion process.
As for the paleo portion of Amanda's diet, that approach also eliminates grains and starches as well as dairy. The emphasizes is on pure protein, such as meat; vegetables and nuts. Now that she's lost the weight, Amanda posted on September 5 that she continues to follow this approach and is "Keto/Paleo about 95% of the time." She admitted that she did occasionally eat a low-carbohydrate, high protein Quest Bar.
