Last Spring retired nurse Rachel Veitch made the news for still driving her 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente. Veitch and her trusty "Chariot" are again making headlines but this time it's bittersweet. Veitch is forced to park her Chariot, after 48 years and 576,000 miles, due to failing eye sight.
After running a red light in March, Veitch said, ‘I know I'm not safe enough to drive. But I have taken it in stride.'
'My Chariot has never lied to me or cheated on me and I can always depend on her,' Veitch told FoxNews.com in July 2009. Which is perhaps why the car has outlasted three marriages and nearly half a decade on the road. Though Veitch credits the long run to her dedicated and meticulous maintenance.
While Chariot will no longer enjoy a cruise around town with Veitch behind the wheel, Chariot's travels aren't over and the car will come to Wisconsin in July to appear in an antique car show.
