Shannon Lambert has my vote for the 2009 L'Oreal Woman of Worth award. She is the creator and driving force behind Pandora's Project, an online community for sexual violence survivors. Pandora’s Project is the largest international online sexual abuse survivor community, serving more than 20,000 survivors worldwide.
Shannon, who bravely shared her story on 20/20 several years ago, was raped at age 15. She suffered in silence for several years before reaching out online. After the 20/20 story, she created a message board to meet the needs of the many survivors who were inspired to also break their silence.
"My own experience inspired me to create an innovative way for survivors of sexual violence to connect with each other and find the resources they need and deserve to heal," Shannon explained.
Pandora's Project provides support, encouragement and valuable information for survivors worldwide. It also offers a lending library for members, and for the first time, sponsored a retreat. More than half of those who attended received financial assistance to help with costs.
The winner of the 2009 award will receive $25,000, which will help Pandora's Project reach even more survivors and have an even greater impact. I'm voting for Shannon- will you join me?
