Melynda Moon, 23, wanted her ears to look like a character from her favorite book series, "The Lord of the Rings."
The woman who lives in Guelph, Ontario, said the decision to change her herself was a long time coming. She believes she was a fairy in a previous life. She documents her experience in the YouTube video accompanying this article:
"The elegance of the elf ear is something I adore. I have always been very close to nature. Pointed ears are the most adorable thing, and I find the 'elven' attire is so elegant. I have always had fantasies about what it would be like to be something other than human, so I decided to change my appearance to look supernatural."
The two-hour operation cost only $408. The doctors skinned and cut pieces from the tips of her ears to form points. According to Moon, the surgery left her "a bit uncomfortable the day after" and her ears "were really swollen and sore with a slight burning sensation."
Why would someone go through such pain to have pointed ears?
The model says it's been worth it just for the reaction she gets from people. Some people assume her ears aren't real and become confused when she tells them that they are real.
Some people are born with pointed ears and have operations to remove the point. However, Moon did just the opposite.
