Anju Kushwaha, 28, of Madhya Pradesh in Indian, miscarried 10 babies in one night, according to a Huffington Post report on Tuesday.
The incident occurred this past week according to the Indo-Asian News Service. Dr. SK Pathak, the assistant superintendent of Sanjay Ghandi Memorial Hospital said the woman delivered nine of the babies before arriving at the hospital where the tenth baby was delivered. He said that all ten of the babies were deceased at 12 weeks.
The woman was experiencing multifoetal pregnancy which usually results in the woman giving twins. The woman’s conception and extreme-multiple pregnancies appear to have been due to fertility drugs. Doctors assert that the miscarriages followed ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome which is a complication from medicines to assist with fertility.
A senior gynecologist named Dr. Sumitra Yadav said that it appears that there was no regular follow-up of her pregnancy after in vitro fertilization. He said that at least three of the babies could have been saved by reducing the pregnancy.
While this is obviously an extremely rare occurrence, a doctor in Rome reportedly took 15 babies from a 35-year-old female in 1971.
The “Octomom” – Nadya Suleman – holds the record for delivering the most surviving children in one birth. She delivered eight babies four years ago.
