Woman gets to meet her baby for the first time on Thursday. Abby Unruh of Osawatomie, KS gave birth while in a medically-induced coma on Jan 7 due to complications from H1N1 flu.
According to Fox 4 News Unruh got sick in December with bronchitis. When she passed out on New Year’s Eve she was taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Unruh had pneumonia as a complication from H1N1 flu. She was unable to breath without the aid of a mechanical ventilator. She was put in a coma so she could be on the ventilator.
The illness induced labor. Unruh went through all the stages of labor. With the help of two teams of doctors Unruh and her baby boy Douglas made it through.
“They told me she actually pushed,” said Katherine Unruh, her grandmother and the baby “Came out crying and peeing. Praise the Lord.”
Unruh was still very sick and had to be on the ventilator for two more weeks. Unruh is still weak but is recovering. She was able to see and touch Douglas for the first time from her room in the intensive care unit.
It is truly amazing what we can do with medical advances. Thanks to the medical professionals at Regional Medical Center Abby Unruh and baby Douglas have a fighting chance.
