Woman gets community service and five-year horse ban

On Dec. 19, a 53-year-old woman, Rosemary Kinsella, was convicted on animal cruelty and placed on community order for three months. She is banned from keeping any horses for the next five years and must pay £810 in costs. She has been tagged to remain indoors between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.

Prosecuting for the RSPCA, Paulinus Barnes said the welfare organization had made several visits to Kinsella’s seven acres at Coedpoeth since Kinsella had been admonished about the care of her two horses. The animals were thin, had lice and had been tangled in barbed wire. There was insufficient feed and grazing. Of great concern was the ragwort that was growing on the land – ragwort is fatal if ingested by horses.

Finally, both horses were taken from Kinsella when their condition was determined to be “emaciated” and she did not seek medical help from a veterinarian. The second charge was her failure to provide a safe pasture for the horses, and the RSPCA said they were in a dangerous enclosure. There was deep mud around the feeding area and scrap metal and wire fencing lay everywhere in their field.

Kinsella agreed she caused the horses unnecessary suffering and failed to seek medical attention.

In court, it came out that the RSPCA nursed the horses back to ready them for adoption but were unable to rehome either Gypsy, the mother, or Soney, the filly. Finally, the RSPCA euthanized both horses.

Kinsella fell apart and broke down in court

The RSPCA representative was questioned by the magistrates. He said the horses had improved enough for rehoming but no one would take them.
