On Thursday afternoon, Putnam County Clerk Dennis Sant told reporters in Carmel, N.Y. that some are living in fear since the Journal News published their personal information as part of an effort to demonize legal gun owners.
"This one narcotics officer from Westchester County just retired. Dedicated his whole career to protecting the citizens of Westchester County and they can’t protect him now. He said I’ve never been so fearful for the safety of my family," he said.
"This one lady whose been stalked for years in Westchester County. She finally found peace, two years without the stalker contacting her. Two days after that paper released her information she gets hangups all night long. She lives in fear, her and her three daughters," he added.
On Christmas Eve we reported that the Journal News, a Gannett-owned publication, published the names and addresses of legal handgun permit holders in two New York Counties, sparking outrage nationwide.
The paper announced plans to publish the information of legal handgun permit holders from Putnam County, but county officials decided not to comply with the paper's Freedom of Information Act request.
"You’re going to have to bring me into court, sue me and we’ll just go the whole nine yards on this situation. I’m not backing down,” he said when Fox News' Megyn Kelly asked what it would take for him to turn over the records.
Sant told Fox that while the paper has the right to publish the names, the move could put gun owners in harm's way.
“I wasn’t going to allow the people in Putnam County to have to endure that type of scrutiny,” he said.
Since the tragic Newtown tragedy, liberals have blamed law-abiding gun owners and the NRA for the shooting, and some -- including a Texas Democratic Party Executive Committee member -- have called for the death of those who support the NRA and the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.
