Woman charged with vehicular homicide in the death of Lawrenceville teen

A Stone Mountain woman was arrested Thursday after hitting and killing a Lawrenceville teenager as he attempted to cross Lawrenceville Highway.

And police said rain in the dimly-lit area contributed to the deadly wreck.

Ms. Sharon Mitchell-Golden, 49, was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide in the death of 17-year-old Dakota Waters, according to Gwinnett County police.

She was also charged with driving more than 300 feet in the center turn lane, police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said.

The incident happened shortly before 7:30 a.m. Wednesday between Hamilton and James roads in Lawrenceville, police said.

Ms. Golden-Mitchell, the driver of a black 2007 Land Rover, was heading northbound on Lawrenceville Highway and entered into the center turn lane to turn left onto James Road.

“The pedestrian was crossing the highway outside of a crosswalk and was standing in the center turn lane as the Land Rover entered the center lane,” Cpl. Edwin Ritter said.

“The driver was unable to stop and struck the pedestrian.”

Mr. Waters was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center where he died a short time later.
