A 54-year-old woman was shot to death when she attempted to break up a fight between some teens in front of her Sumter home last week.
And police said on Friday that they have charged an 18-year-old with the crime.
The investigation began about 6 p.m. Thursday when officers received a report of a woman lying in the yard of a home in the 400 block of Council Street.
"When officers arrived on the scene they found a 54-year-old female lying in the front yard of her residence with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest," Deputy Chief Alvin Holston said.
Investigators later identified her as Ms. Patricia Singleton. She was transported to Tuomey Regional Hospital where she died from the gunshot wound, Mr. Holston said.
On Friday, investigators arrested Mr. Derek Darby for the shooting.
"While the motive for the shooting is still under investigation, detectives believe that Singleton attempted to break up a fight between a group of young people that was taking place in front of her residence," Mr. Holston said.
"It was during her efforts to break up the altercation that Singleton was shot."
Police found Mr. Darby at 12:15 a.m. at a local motel. He was charged with murder and was being held at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center, Mr. Holston said.
