A 53-year-old woman was hit and killed early Tuesday morning while in the crosswalk of a southwest Atlanta street. And police a day later were still searching for the SUV driver who struck her.
On Wednesday, the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman as Ms. Cassandra Head, of Atlanta.
Ms. Head’s family said she was walking to the bus stop on her way to work at the post office when she was hit and killed.
The incident happened around 6 a.m. at 3620 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive near the intersection of Bakers Ferry Road, according to Atlanta police.
“The victim, a 53-year-old female, was reported as being in the crosswalk when a dark-colored SUV came through the light heading east and struck the victim with the front of the vehicle,” police spokesman Mr. Carlos Campos said.
“The impact caused the victim to be knocked onto the sidewalk causing severe injuries. The suspect vehicle did not stop and drove off.”
Ms. Head died at the scene and was transported to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The family told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that it has been a difficult year for them. Ms. Head lost her boyfriend of four years two weeks ago, and two weeks before that, her boyfriend lost his son.
“She’s everything. She’s everything to us,” Ms. Head’s daughter, also named Ms. Cassandra Head, told the paper.
Ms. Head left behind five children and 16 grandchildren.
“I can’t even explain what kind of person it is to sit here knowing you hit somebody and not even stop,” Ms. Cassandra Head said. “If you turn yourself in, that means that you are sorry for what you did.”
