A 38-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly removing the tails and dew claws of eight newborn puppies, killing one of them, police said Thursday.

Ms. Leslie Ayo was charged with eight counts of cruelty to animals, according to a news released from the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office.

On Nov. 19, officers responded to 810 Deer Oaks Drive in Lawrenceville after getting a report from Ms. Vanessa Speed that she paid Ms. Ayo $150 to have her newborn litter of Rottweiler puppies de-wormed, de-clawed and their tails removed, Deputy Shannon Volkodav said.

Ms. Speed told deputies Ms. Ayo arrived at her home on Nov. 18 and performed the procedures in her kitchen.

“Once the procedures were completed, Ms. Speed noted that the puppies’ tails were cut too short and that they appeared to be “struggling,’” Deputy Volkodav said.

One of the puppies was taken to a veterinarian, who contacted Gwinnett County Animal Welfare & Enforcement due to the puppy’s condition. That puppy later died.

The conditions of the other puppies were not immediately known.

Gwinnett County Police issued warrants for the arrest of Ms. Ayo, which were served Thursday by deputies at 6743 Rivertown Road in Fairburn.

She was transported to the Gwinnett County Jail without incident.
